Why a Seed Library?
The North Chicago Public Library’s Seed Library was put into place to share seeds with the North Chicago community for free.
The purpose of any seed library is to promote biodiversity, decrease our dependence on major seed companies, and to preserve open-pollinated and heirloom seeds.
What do we have?
The library supplies non-GMO, heirloom seeds. Heirloom seeds are seeds that have been passed down from generation to generation. Planting these seeds allows gardeners to grow crops, harvest seeds, and use those seeds for future seasons.
To find what type of seeds we supply, head over to the adult section where you will find our Seed Library catalog.
How does it work?
- Choose up to 4 seed packets a day, per household.
- Once you’ve chosen your seed packets, head over to adult circulation to check out your seeds with your NCPL library card.
- Take your seeds home, plant, and enjoy! No need to return the seed packets.
Seeds are completely free, so please only take what you will use for this season.
Consider harvesting and returning seeds from your crops. Be sure to dry your seeds and store them in a dry, cool place until you can return the seeds to the library!
