ABOUT

Libraries are the memory of humankind, irreplaceable repositories of documents of human thoughts and actions. The North Chicago Public Library is a facility that strives to service a diverse population of 42,435 in the North Chicago area and libraries in surrounding cities. We are responsible to provide a great storehouse of knowledge at the heart of the world's only United States Navy Training Facility, The Great Lakes Naval Training Center which borders the city to the south and east.

As its overriding mission, the NCPL seeks to provide learning resources and informational services that support and improve individual, family, and community life while enhancing educational, historical, cultural, and recreational experiences. In addition, we courageously attempt to transform NCPL's environment into a setting that is as comfortable as your living room. All NCPL programs are offered free of charge to North Chicago and Great Lakes Naval Training Center residents on a first-come, first-served basis with a valid library card without distinction as to income, religion, nationality, or other human condition. Furthermore, all programs are regularly posted in the local newspaper as well as at the library. Due to its efforts, in the recent past the NCPL has doubled in cardholders and library usage by both adults and children.

We are committed to develop a city of readers by providing a range of books, periodicals, and other multimedia at appropriate levels for all college courses, ensure that relevant and up-to-date material is available to meet the needs of staff and students, to actively stimulate the optimum use of library resources, to provide a library environment commensurate with a college of higher education and one that is equivalent with to the comfort of ones living room, to encourage all staff to develop job skills which are relevant to meet the technological revolution which is transforming the library world, to improve the efficient, effectiveness and management of library provision through the application of automated systems, and to promote the image of library staff as professionals in the exploitation of information.
To fulfill our mission, the North Chicago Public Library respects the community's values, interests, and recommendations as we provide services to patrons of the New Millennium.
